COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) gradually reduces lung function, making every breath more difficult. To shed light on the estimated 800,000 people living with COPD in the Netherlands, pharmaceutical company Chiesi partnered with singer Roxeanne Hazes, who collaborated with real patients to perform the song “Nooit Voorbij”.
Brief
Vocoda.AI was brought in to make Roxeanne Hazes’ voice sound as if she had limited lung capacity. The goal was to give listeners an immersive, emotional understanding of the challenges faced by people with lung conditions.
Execution
Alongside Roxanne, patients suffering from COPD also performed the song. With the help of AI, the team transformed Roxeanne’s voice to sound as if she had COPD, preserving her unique vocal character while adding the shortness of breath, raspiness, and reduced strength that come with limited lung capacity.
Result
This resulted in three versions of the song: one with Roxeanne's voice at 100% lung function and two versions showing how she sounds with reduced lung function of 60% and 30%. The first version represents a healthy, fully powered voice, while the other two bring to life the real impact of respiratory illness. This approach allowed listeners to experience the effects of COPD both audibly and emotionally.
